Operational authority during a crisis depends on the availability of the plan
Case study overview.
am Mulholland of Standby Consulting provides the recovery logic for large corporations. This engagement was focused on the strategic construction of the delivery tool. The goal was to ensure the advice remained accessible when the lights went out and networks failed.
The objective was to transform technical resilience protocols into a robust, standalone PDF for management teams.
Standby Consulting provides critical IT recovery services. Their clients require the ability to react to and survive emergency situations. The core challenge was that technical advice is only valuable if it can be accessed during a total system failure. Flying Lizard was contracted to build the structural logic for a standalone PDF document. This tool had to bypass all requirements for network connectivity or specialized software.
Client.
Standby Consulting. A specialist provider of Business Continuity and IT Disaster Recovery services based in New Zealand and the Middle East.
Challenge.
Most business continuity plans are tethered to the infrastructure they are meant to protect. If a plan is stored on a company server or a cloud drive, it becomes inaccessible during a network failure. For the corporate clients of Standby Consulting, this dependency was a critical failure point. The requirement was a standalone file that stayed with the owner, not the network.
Strategic Outcome.
The result was the development of a logic led business continuity plan delivered as a standalone, offline PDF. This asset was engineered to be the lowest common denominator of digital files. It was built to be opened on any mobile device or sent to any available printer for physical use. This established a state of structural autonomy for the clients.
Methodology.
The build was guided by the principle of removing dependencies. While the technical content was provided by Standby Consulting, the work involved mapping that data into a non linear format. This included testing for universal font rendering and rapid navigation without a live index. The document was designed to remain legible on small format screens and in black and white print.

What changed in the business
The delivery of the service changed from a digital file to a functional command tool.
Testing confirmed that managers could access critical recovery steps on personal devices without relying on company servers. This increased the reliability of the Standby Consulting offering. Clients received an asset that functioned as a tangible insurance policy for their data.
Strategic Outcome for Standby Consulting
Why this worked.
The mechanism of success was the decoupling of logic from infrastructure. By choosing a low tech medium like a highly optimized PDF, the delivery accounted for the worst case scenario. This ensured that the expertise remained in the hands of the user regardless of the state of the local environment.

Key lesson for business owners.
The value of a solution is determined by its availability under pressure. Strategic engineering must be applied to the delivery of an asset to ensure it survives the conditions it was built to solve. Resilience is found in simplicity and the removal of digital dependencies.
Client validation
“Dayne turned a complex business continuity plan into an offline, practical tool my clients could rely on in failure scenarios. He’s calm, methodical, and precise. Focused on how information works under pressure, not just how it looks.”

A Brand Strategy Code Session then establishes the underlying decision logic required to build resilient tools that hold under pressure.
Timeline note.
The project was initiated in 2014 and the resilient delivery model was implemented by 2015.
