Who I am and how I work

I’m Dayne Smith, an independent brand strategist based in Wellington.
For thirty years, I’ve worked with business owners in New Zealand, Australia, and the United States to establish clear brand strategy before marketing begins. I focus exclusively on strategy, not design, advertising, or execution.
My work is about helping owners decide before they spend. Position, message, and intent are set first, so suppliers can be briefed once and decisions can be carried through consistently.
I work one to one, without agency ties or conflicting interests. The outcome is a documented strategy that gives you a clear line of sight from decision to spend.
Alongside my practice, I am recognised as a Brand Strategy Mentor with Business Mentors New Zealand, supporting owners at key points of change.
Strategy first, execution second.
My work follows a deliberate sequence: strategy first, execution second.
Before anything is built, the first step is to develop your insight into what you currently believe, what is already in place, and where the gaps sit.
From there, we define the Brand Strategy Code. This becomes the written foundation that establishes one clear plan before any marketing, design, or system work begins. It gives direction so execution is no longer guesswork.
My approach is informed by master-level brand thinking from Marty Neumeier, David Aaker, Jean-Noël Kapferer, and Ries and Trout. Not as rigid models, but as disciplined ways of thinking that help founders move step by step toward a strategy they can test, refine, and apply with confidence.
For proof of approach, see the Case Studies hub.
Where my thinking is tested, not taught
The environments that shape my thinking.
I have spent years working in environments where ideas are challenged and decisions have real financial consequences. That pressure has shaped how I approach brand strategy. I focus on clear thinking, sound logic, and decisions that can actually be executed, not theory that looks good but fails in practice.

The return on expert strategic clarity
Every business hits the same wall. Build the architecture to break through.
Messaging feels expensive, fragmented, and generic. That’s not a marketing problem, it’s a missing-strategy problem that drains capital. Strategic clarity solves it at any stage.
The 3 business life scenarios:
- Starting Out: establishing a brand foundation from day one, so every dollar invested builds long-term value.
- Under Pressure: when competition erodes revenue or positioning feels generic, it is time to ’zag’ while others ’zig’ (wise words from Marty Neumeier).
- Expanding: growth demands a re-write of brand architecture and messaging; what worked before won’t scale forward.
Who can benefit from these scenarios?
In each case, branding strategy is not the decoration. It is the discipline that protects capital, defines direction, and equips leaders to move with confidence.
- Early-Stage Business Owners launching new ventures who require strategic clarity before any marketing investment. Rather than guessing at positioning, they establish their brand architecture systematically.
- Established Entrepreneurs who have built successful operations but lack cohesive brand strategy. They require strategic foundation to guide consistent growth rather than tactical marketing attempts.
- Leaders developing personal brands who require strategic differentiation in competitive markets. They understand that professional reputation requires strategic positioning, not merely visibility.
These business owners can recognise that strategic brand architecture is their primary profit multiplier. The foundation that transforms operational success into sustainable competitive advantage and premium pricing authority.
